UNEXPECTED SPACES Images + Installation Unexpected Space presents a set of scenarios that appear both intentionally dull and unexpectedly strange. Each image acts as a performance set within the urban environment, a place where uncanny moments seem plentiful and familiar. Through these enactments and disturbances, the artist attempts to make light of the curious nature of urban spaces and the objects and figures that inhabit and move through them. Many of the images seem to invoke memories of our own meanderings through urban pathways. We see a decontextualized shelving unit blocking an exterior doorway and a man obscured by a tree, gazing into a public swimming pool; the images present us with the banality of the city while reminding us that perhaps these moments are not banal at all, but rather, intensely odd and significant gestures made by human beings navigating through these spaces together, with us, leaving oddities in their paths.
